Burned to 2D

4 May 2009 4 Comments

A few years ago Erik and I – out of curiosity and boredom – tried to set a plastic chair on fire and learned, this was no easy task at all. The thing just wouldn´t burn, we had to apply half a bottle of grill lighter fluid before it half-way went off. The image below shows the effect of some more serious fire. Jim from Ramona, CA has this photo documenting the devastations resulting from a 2007 forest fire on his Picasa. Interestingly, this chair apparently burned down to a flat 2D-shape on the ground, twisted as if died in final spasms but not much unlike the shadow it once casted. Sad story, fascinating image.

Amazing, contra-intuitive fact of the day by the way: Sufficient air provided, pure Polypropylene burns to water and carbon dioxide – and nothing more.

Thanks for the comments guys. Since this flat Mono proved rather popular, I guess I shall revisit an ages old idea for a project that deals with, uhm, the chair and flatness.
Talking about ages: Yepp, Erik, the “few years” are six actually and they weren´t the easiest I ever had. Deciscions made though: All new now.
    Take care everybody.
