Washington DC based artist Edmond van der Bijl in his sculptures works with “units” he re-combines into new sculptural works, thus the original unit ..

.. loses its original function and becomes a new entity, perhaps even an object of beauty. In a world obsessed with ‘mass production’, the focus of this series is to use what is readily available rather than to use additional resources to create a new object.

Not exactly a mind-blowing approach, but in the case of “Chairbacks” (2003), I like the result that works both as a compact sculpture as well as a more expansive installation, that shakes up – combined – dimensional trenches. Plus: 2003. (Yes, 2003!).
