Christian says “These models, date and manufacture unknown, are remarkable in their insistence in utilizing an intact wooden chair as an exoskeleton for the remains of an aged monobloc. These chairs were found and catalogued by Ingo Niermann and Christian Kracht in Avenida Olof Palme, Maputo, Mozambique, August 22nd, 2006.
(for further reference on the subject of endo-/exoskeletons of monoblocs displayed in Maputo/Mozambique, see “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitungâ€?, September 3rd, 2006, travel section)”
Cheers!

A funny little piece in German Sueddeutsche Zeitung this week. Monika Goetsch interviews food writer Wolfgang Abel who heavily opposes plastic chairs, not only in up-market restaurants. Hilarious how she refers to the chair´s qualities but her interviewee insists on its viciousness. Guess, he would rave against computer games and baggy pants in a similar fashion ..

Thanks Philipp for the pointer.

How many chairs can you squeeze into a room? This is the monoblock collection of Bryan who lives in Pennsylvania not far from the US factory of French monoblock giant Grosfillex.
Here´s another photo Bryan took during his trip to see the Indy 500 race. I find the second and third chair quite remarkable.

I was much surprised when I received an email yesterday from Threes Anna, a Dutch writer and director who collects photos of plastic patio chairs since 2003. Our little club becomes bigger and bigger it seems. Go see her amazing collection. Photos above from Mozambique, a screenshot from the site.

A few months ago I found out someone had registered the domain plastikstuhl.de – today, after I had visited flickr I noticed the webspace by now is a semi-functional weblog though it has not been updated for quite a while. It is hosted by Henning from Hamburg (haven´t spoken with you so far – but cheers Henrik anyway!) aka DJ Hummus who also posted quite a flickr set of plastic chairs. That brings the number of plastic chair focussed weblogs to an amazing three, including my stuff here and …

.. with the plastic patio chair, when the guys went to Shelburne Falls Meditation Center earlier this year. Actually the statement
No matter how ugly I wanted this chair to be, by the end of the ten days, I came to accept this design (of which there are many variations) as a classic. The curves are elegant. The simplicity of the all-one construction is extremely efficient.
appears as a slight surprise when you look at Appartment Therapy´s other posts that tend to be a bit more into high-ish design. Nevertheless I …

Philipp recently pointed out in an email, that unlike the chair the open party tent, while very popular in the 1990s, is not doing so big anymore.
Here´s a nostalgic photo of both species, charmingly disarranged. Thanks Daniel for the pic.
